GCO MiniUpdate-HB875 Final House Hearing Tomorrow

Georgia Carry

February 5, 2014

Dear GCO Member,

The previous MiniUpdate erroneously stated the meeting tomorrow was a "Hearing Only".  This is incorrect.  The hearing tomorrow is actual the Final Hearing for HB 875.  The update should have read:

The House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee will hold the Final Hearing and vote HB875, The Safe Carry Protection Act.  The vote will be an up or down vote on whether the bill will die in Committee or be passed to the House Rules Committee.  The meeting will be Thursday, February 6, 2014.  The hearing will be held at 4 PM in Room 606 in the Cloverdell Legislative Office Building (CLOB).  The address is of the CLOB is 18 Capitol Square SW, Atlanta, GA, 30334.

The room was full of gun prohibitionists yesterday and they all spoke.  Thursday will be our day to speak.  We need all the members we can get to come to this hearing and wear your Gun Saves Lives Buttons.

Unlike the gun prohibitionists, we should respect what others say, not applaud nor make snarky remarks or laugh at what others say.  That protocol was certainly not followed today.

We are asking all available members to do your best to be at tomorrow's hearing.  We will have Guns Saves Lives buttons available for you to make your presence known.  It is expected the gun prohibitionists will be there and we need to let the committee and legislators know that we are supporting this bill.

The CLOB is located south and across the street from the Capitol Building.

Hopefully we will see you there.

George recently returned to the place where he discovered Nephi's Harbor. When he first visited Khor Rori, the natural inlet from the Indian Ocean was an abandoned natural inlet. Since that day, the ancient harbor has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and excavations have uncovered artifacts that are of interested to students of the Book of Mormon. Some of these are covered in this month's featured article.

FREE E-Book! George Potter's, The Truth About Book of Mormon Archaeology is still free. This E-Book will be sent to you free with any order from the Nephi Project Discovery Store

Our online store will continue offering our six-film documentary DVD  Discovering Lehi's Trail for the low price of $24.95. George's 250-page full-color hardcover book Voyages of the Book of Mormon is still available for only $24.00 (suggested retail value of $39.95).

Finally, we are offering the full-color book Lehi in the Wilderness for only $17.95. Why not help support the Nephi Project by visiting the Discovery Store at www.nephiproject.com and see all of these specials and many other LDS books and films we have to offer.

The Khor Rori Temple

By George Potter

The recently excavated temple at Khor Rori has revealed several extraordinary artifacts as well as an architectural design that could be of interest to LDS members. What do we know for certainty is that Nephi converted people while he traveled in the wilderness from Jerusalem (D&C 33:7,8).

It is also probable that Nephi built his ship at the frankincense
harbor of Khor Rori (see my books Lehi in the Wilderness and The Voyages of the Book of Mormon).

All that remains today of the temple at Khor Rori is its foundation. The building once consisted of three rooms, one which contained an altar. Archaeological architects have reconstructed what they believe was the design of the temple.

As noted in last November's featured article, archaeologists have uncovered several smelters at Khor Rori. In the book Khor Rori (Sumhuram), by the Office of the Adviser to His Majesty the Sultan for Cultural Affairs, we read:

"Many of these bronze objects seem to have been cast with the lost-wax technique and finished by hammering and engraving" p. 32. Some of the artifacts found at the temple were metal plaques, p. 32.

What I found interesting is that a stone box still rest in the remains of the temple. The question begs to be asked, did the stone box at the temple once contain metal scriptures.

Among the artifacts recovered from the Khor Rori temple is a cast metal bowl with writing on it. But the most curious artifact from the temple is now found in the History Hall of the Frankincense Museum in Salalah.  It is a metal plate with the figure of a man. His manner of dress and the placement of his hands are of special interest to LDS readers. The hands would be reversed on the reverse side of the plaque.

Timothy's Photograph of the Month
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As I noted last month (January), to qualify as a candidate for the Valley of Lemuel we needed to discover possible artifacts for Lehi's altar.
One need not speculate on this point. Nephi wrote that his father built an altar of stones (1 Ne 2:7).
We dedicated much of our time to the search for possible remains of altars and were rewarded by finding several.
The one altar candidate that caught our attention was the remains discovered by Michael Bellersen and Satya Nand just above the ruins of the ancient campsite that has been dated to the time of Lehi.
The site had been disturbed by unknown individuals who had dug several holes at the site-apparently searching for buried treasure.
What makes this site unique were the black slate stones that covered the top of the site. The black stones were not "native" to the sandstone hill. As Michael explained, "Someone had to bring them up here."
Whoever disturbed this site swept away a good portion of the stones. They were scattered just below the top of the hill. Michael made a compelling argument for why the site qualified as Nephi's altar.
The February "Photograph of the Month" is of Michael Bellersen at his altar candidate delivering his argument  for it being an ancient altar. It is selected from Part 1:Discovering the Valley of Lemuel of our 6-part film DVD, Discovering Lehi's Trail
